Reception have been busy exploring weight this week through lots of practical, hands-on maths activities!
We started the week outdoors by becoming weight detectives. The children searched the outdoor area for different objects and worked together to sort them into two groups: heavy and light. There were lots of great discussions as the children explained their ideas and compared the objects they had found.
To check our thinking, the children became “human weighing scales”! Standing carefully and comparing objects in their hands helped the children to feel which items were heavier and which were lighter.
Later in the week, we used real balance scales to investigate weight even further. The children explored different classroom objects and used cubes to measure how heavy they were. They carefully counted how many cubes each item weighed and compared different objects using the scales.
We also discussed what happened to the balance scales when objects were placed on them, noticing that the heavier object made the scale tip down while the lighter object lifted up.
It has been wonderful to see the children exploring, predicting, comparing and using mathematical language so confidently throughout the week!
