Our EYFS learners took their maths outdoors today for a giant investigation into height and comparison!

Using our outdoor area, the children were challenged to build stacks and towers that were taller or shorter than a target height!

Hands-On Building Materials

The children worked in teams, using large-scale equipment to make big comparisons:

  • Tyres: Stacked up high to make super sturdy, heavy towers.
  • Crates: Carefully balanced to see how high they could safely reach.
  • Giant Connect 4: Used to compare rows and stacks side-by-side.

What We Learned

  • Key Vocabulary: Practising words like taller and shorter.
  • Problem Solving: Figuring out how to make a stack taller safely without it toppling over!
  • Teamwork: Working together to lift, balance, and build big structures.

It was fantastic to see so much enthusiastic mathematical talk and active learning outdoors. Amazing work, EYFS!

Try It at Home

  • Next time you're building with Lego, cushions, or cardboard boxes at home, ask your child: "Can you make a tower that is taller than this one?" or "Who is the tallest person in our family?"
